FAQs

  • The term "artist" is defined broadly for this residency. It extends beyond visual art to include artists of all levels, mediums and stages of practice.

The residency is self-directed and does not require any community commitment or final work to be produced. We believe that letting the mind and body relax and to exit normal life for a little while are important to the creative process. To do so in nature can be even more transformative. Alternatively, if you need some undisturbed space and quiet to work, this can be a productive time.

We do require artistic intention to use the space for residency purposes. Please see our apply page for more info.

This is a good fit for those comfortable camping or looking to try a camping experience. The cabin is completely off-grid (no electricity, no flush toilet, no central heat/air). There is a shared (nice!) outdoor shower with hot and cold water. You should have a diy spirit and be ready for bugs, a compost toilet, possibly no phone service depending on your carrier, cooking and showering outside, and varying weather. This residency promotes closeness to nature, but the realties of that should be understood. It’s fun! It’s cozy! But it is not a fancy hotel!

A car is suggested. Cell service (depending on carrier) and wi-fi are generally accessible about 10 mins away in Belfast, if you need. There is currently no wi-fi at the cabin.

  • We try to provide most everything for a super cozy glamping stay, but we do suggest a headlamp or flashlight, extra towels (if you need more than one large bath and one face towel), reading material, art supplies, rain gear, and layers for all weather (sweather in July do happen). It’s Maine.

  • Water for drinking and washing dishes (cold only) at the cabin

Hot shower at the back of our house (shared between you as guests and us occasionally)

Fresh ground coffee + French press, tea

    Olive oil for cooking

Battery powered fan for sleeping on hot nights

Outdoor camping cook stove + fuel

    One lantern

Full bedding (all high quality linen)

One luxury heavy wool blanket for cool nights

Basic kitchen items (silverware, plates, bowls, salt and pepper, one knife, cutting board, tea kettle, two kitchen towels for drying, wine opener, two wine glasses, ceramic cups, biodegradable dish soap)

1 bath and face towel per guest

    Toilet paper

    Hand sanitizer

Firewood and starter supplies for one outdoor fire (more camp wood usually available locally)

    Compost bin + rubbish bin

    One Anker phone charger

  • Residencies are low-key where you will be the only hosted artist present. They are self-directed—come and go as you please and work or rest as you see fit.

We live near the cabin as it sits at the back of our personal homestead. We go to great lengths to give you privacy. You will have access to the cabin, a private outhouse and shared outdoor shower at the back of our house about a 1 min walk from the cabin.

We will can provide a tour of the cabin and property when you arrive upon request.

  • We try to make this residency accessible while still compensating in some way the amount of time, effort, money and heart that goes into curating and offering this space.

For artist residencies we have a sliding scale of $75-200+ per night. If you are able to pay at the upper end of that scale, please consider doing so as it makes this option possible for us while providing oppportines for folks paying at the lower end.

If this range is still cost porhibitve, please be in contact directly at halfmoonvalleyhomestead@gmail.com and we will see what we can work out!

  • Most work (if you are doing so) is done at the cabin or through adventuring locally. We have no dedicated studio at this time. We often have a bell tent set up that can work as an auxiliary, none messy workspace as well as a large picnic table near our house.

  • We allow well behaved dogs. Please note they should be leashed walking to/from cabin as we have chickens, ducks and geese usually free ranging. We also have another dog on the property. We prefer no dirty fur babies on the bed in the cabin as well plz :)
